Hancock, New Hampshire — 3 July 2022

We have been smitten by the beauty of the Acadia Peninsula. I need to do some catching up.

In the quaint New England village of Hancock, New Hampshire, where Paul Revere’s bell #237 still peals on the hour, we had a delightful visit with our author friends Sy and Howard. We have been communicating via email and snail mail for years, now we have met. They are such a delightfully warm and engaging couple. Their passion for their work leads one to the conclusion that they are not living ‘lives of quiet desperation’ of which their fellow New Hampshirite, Henry David Thoreau wrote. They are alive and the world is so much the better for it.

Sy’s book, The Hawks Way, came out in the Spring. She is busy at work on her next book. Turtles will be the subject.

Somehow my life keeps crossing paths with Howard’s book, Chasing Eden. Our travels took us to Long Island and one cannot drive the Island passing suburban home after suburban home and not think of Howard’s essay Veterans Memorial Island—Peace by the Quarter Acre. In Keene, New Hampshire we walked the streets that Dr. Albert Johnson and his family walked eighty years ago. Albert Johnson of Lost Boundaries fame, Crossing Over, Crossing Back.

Then in Peterborough, New Hampshire we stumbled into the Toadstool Bookstore, a lovely venue. While we are in a non-accumulation stage given our lack of space, we still enjoy making a day of it, browsing the shelves of independent bookstores.  A CD on a counter just drew me in…A Journey to the White Mountains in Words and Music. Ben Cosgrove masterfully manipulates the ivory keys of his piano bringing to life the emotion engendered by Howard’s words. The two bring to life the White Mountains and its stories much as Ferde Grofe brought that masterpiece of nature to life in his Grand Canyon Suite. We have listened to this CD several times and I have had to go back and re-read sections of Howard’s book as new thoughts come to mind…a wonderful experience…Thank You Howard.

More catching up to follow.

Peace…Wanderers in Wonder.
