‘The Rifle’ sculpture in Clifden, Ireland honors the courageous efforts of John Reilly and the San Patricios on behalf of Mexico during the Mexican American War (War of American Aggression to our friends south of the border). The city of Clifden in Ireland celebrates John Reilly, a native son, and the San Patricios annually on St. Patrick’s Day.

Interesting interview with a Harvard professor. Her mentioning of John Reilly hit a chord with me. We have exchanged views on the teaching of American History…a very intelligent young lady.

The Chieftains featuring Ry Cooder – San Patricio EPK
A great video of American music legend Ry Cooder collaborating with Irish music legends, The Chieftains.
John Reilly and two hundred +/- Irish and German American soldiers deserted the U.S. Army during the Mexican American War (War of American Aggression). Their personal histories led them to the conclusion that they were on the wrong side…fighting poor campesinois for the rich and powerful United States. The Irish Catholics had fought their English masters for generations just for the right to live. The Germans had fought their Grand Burgher masters for generations for the same reason. They also were treated to a double standard by the U.S. Army…half the pay of ‘American’ soldiers and twice the punishment.
Do remember, no self respecting Irishman or Irishwoman in Ireland eats ‘corned beef and cabbage’ on St. Patrick’s day…actually they never eat corned beef and cabbage in Ireland. Eat Seared Salmon over a bed Colcannon or Lamb Stew with Irish Soda Bread like the Irish in Ireland do on St. Patrick’s Day.
Peace…Wanderers in Wonder.
