In the summer of 1921 my Great Aunt Lucie took a two month RR/Auto/Horse Drawn Wagon package tour of the West. For a young lady in her late twenties who was born and raised in Brooklyn this was quite an adventure to undertake. Of course Lucie was an adventurer. She had already served two years in Europe during and after WWI with the Women’s Overseas Service League (WOSL) helping wounded soldier convalesce. More later…

Lucie’s Bear Photograph.
To make good on their guarantee, the tour company had the kitchen staff at the Old Faithful Inn put the dinner scraps and unusable leftovers out behind the inn each evening at 7:30. Dinner was from 6:30 – 7:30 each evening. Then the patrons were told to go to the second floor balcony to see and photo a bear. Worked every time. At 7:45 the guests were served coffee and dessert.
An aside…in 1945 Lucy was present at the inaugural meeting of the United Nations (UN) in San Francisco. She and her associates had enlisted the help of Eleanor Roosevelt to get the WOSL recognized by the UN as a Non Governmental Organization (NGO). They were successful and the WOSL became one of the UN’s first NGO’s.
Somewhere on this damn device I have a picture of Eleanor and Lucy in conference…damned if I can find it.
